Even though I am not a real fan of getting old, I realize that I can’t do much about it. I would like to think that I don’t look much older than I did at thirty, but looking in the mirror is a different story. Yes, the grey hairs are there and I certainly don’t have as much of it as I used to. If you look hard, there are some wrinkles there too, but we won’t talk too much about it. But the benefit of getting older is that you get to have another birthday, and I had a great time celebrating my 40th.
Now, I didn’t have high expectations for my birthday party this year as I had forgotten about it. I don’t know about you, but every year it seems that my birthday is less and less important, and I guess this was the first year it didn’t matter to me. No one asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and we had not discussed it at all, so I wasn’t expecting anything. I suppose that is why the surprise birthday worked out so well – I had no idea it was coming.
I had come home from work ready to sit down and have a coffee. It was late, I had a long week at work, and I was looking forward to relaxing for the weekend. But just as soon as I walked in the door, everyone jumped out and shouted “surprise!” I was shocked, but once I calmed down, I felt really thankful that I had friends and family that had remembered my birthday.
The party went on for most of the evening, and I received some great gifts. My wife bought me the MMA gear that I had been talking about for months, and it was great to catch up with some of my old friends that I had not seen in awhile. Originally, I had thought that turning forty would be the end of the road for me, but it looks like getting old isn’t so bad. I can’t wait until my birthday next year!
